Guangzhou, China – GAC Group, one of China’s leading automakers, is venturing into the premium electric vehicle (EV) market with its Huawang project, a collaboration with tech giant Huawei. According to GAC Group Chairman Feng Xingya, the Huawang project is specifically targeting the RMB 300,000 (approximately $41,500 USD) and above segment, with Huawei taking the lead in defining the product and its positioning.

Speaking at the 2024 investor performance briefing, Feng emphasized GAC’s commitment to supporting the Huawang team, ensuring their autonomy in product development and definition. This strategy underscores GAC’s ambition to leverage Huawei’s expertise in intelligent automotive technologies to create a competitive edge in the burgeoning premium EV market.

The establishment of Huawang Automobile Technology (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. on March 18, with a substantial investment of RMB 1.5 billion from GAC Group, marks a significant step in this strategic partnership. The new company is poised to launch a brand new high-end intelligent vehicle brand in the near future, signaling GAC’s broader ambition in the smart car ecosystem and premium brand development. This initiative represents the latest development in the GH project, a collaborative effort between GAC and Huawei.

Under the Huawang project, the new brand will feature vehicles equipped with Huawei’s intelligent driving software, smart cockpits, and intelligent vehicle control solutions. GAC Group highlights that Huawang will deeply integrate the strengths of both companies in areas such as intelligence, ecosystem, and brand synergy. The project aims to adopt Huawei’s IPD (Integrated Product Development) and IPMS (Integrated Product Marketing and Sales) system experience to build a new process that runs through product definition, marketing, and ecosystem services.

Notably, GAC Group has clarified that Huawang (GH) project will operate as a light asset company, prioritizing the utilization of existing production capacity from GAC’s Aion and Trumpchi brands. This approach allows for a more agile and efficient entry into the premium EV market.

The collaboration between GAC Group and Huawei represents a significant trend in the automotive industry, where automakers are increasingly partnering with technology companies to develop next-generation intelligent vehicles. By combining GAC’s manufacturing expertise with Huawei’s technological prowess, the Huawang project has the potential to disrupt the premium EV market and offer consumers innovative and compelling electric vehicles.
