Shanghai, China – In a move to modernize road maintenance and enhance safety, Shanghai has deployed intelligent road inspection robots equipped with cutting-edge Beidou+AI technology. These robots, traversing approximately 50 kilometers daily within the city, are designed to detect road defects such as potholes, cracks, and damaged barriers with remarkable accuracy.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. Urban Operation (Group) Co., Ltd. (Urban Operation) and Qianxun Spatial Intelligence Inc. (Qianxun SI). Their strategic partnership aims to replace traditional manual inspections with a more efficient, intelligent, and standardized solution. The partnership was formalized in November 2024.

The road inspection robots integrate Qianxun SI’s Qianxun Chi Guan technology with the Smart City Cloud Inspection platform developed by Urban Operation. This integrated solution has already been implemented in several cities, including Shanghai, Chengdu, Zhuhai, and Jiashan in Zhejiang Province.

Previously, we relied on manual road inspections, deploying three to four engineering vehicles each day. One person would drive, while another professional maintenance worker would visually inspect the road, manually record issues, and take photos. This was a high-risk and inefficient process, explained the head of the Urban Operation inspection project. With the introduction of intelligent inspection robots, we only need one vehicle and one person, effectively doubling our inspection efficiency.

The robots automatically report detected issues to the Smart City Cloud Inspection platform. After a rapid verification by professional technical engineers, road defects are typically repaired within 3-12 hours, significantly improving road safety.

Qianxun SI, founded in August 2015, is a leading global spatial intelligence technology company. It leverages data from the Beidou satellite system (compatible with GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo) to provide high-precision positioning services.

This deployment marks a significant step towards smart city management, showcasing the potential of AI and spatial intelligence in improving urban infrastructure and public safety. The success of this project in Shanghai could pave the way for wider adoption of similar technologies in other cities across China and beyond.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shanghai deploys AI-powered road inspection robots with Beidou+AI technology.
  • The robots detect road defects and report them to a central platform for rapid repair.
  • The initiative is a collaboration between Urban Operation and Qianxun SI.
  • The technology has already been implemented in multiple cities.
  • The deployment significantly improves inspection efficiency and road safety.
