Seoul, March 28th – The South Korean government is closely monitoring the safety of its citizens residing in Myanmar and Thailand following a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on Thursday. As of late Thursday, there were no reports of South Korean casualties, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.7, was centered in central Myanmar, with tremors felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened a joint situation review meeting, presided over by Yoon Ju-chang, Director-General of the Consular Affairs Bureau. Representatives from the South Korean embassies in both Myanmar and Thailand participated in the meeting.
Both embassies have issued public safety alerts, urging South Korean citizens in the affected areas to avoid travel to or prolonged stays in the earthquake zone. The alerts also emphasized the importance of vigilance and safety precautions.
Currently, there are over 2,000 South Korean citizens residing in Myanmar and over 20,200 in Thailand.
The South Korean government will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary assistance to its citizens in the region.
