Beijing, March 27, 2024 – Tencent’s popular first-person shooter (FPS) game, CrossFire, is set to launch a Nostalgia Mode on April 21st, offering players a trip back in time to the game’s earlier days. The announcement, first reported by IT Home, promises a return to the gameplay and content of 2012 and earlier, a period many consider the game’s golden age.

The key feature of this new mode is the deliberate absence of hero-class weapons and permanent weapons, a significant departure from the modern CrossFire experience. This decision aims to recreate the game’s original balance and challenge, focusing on skill and strategy rather than weapon advantage.

We want to give players a chance to relive the CrossFire they remember, a Tencent representative stated in a previous announcement. The Nostalgia Mode is a love letter to our dedicated community, a chance to experience the game in its purest form.

The Nostalgia Mode will also feature a host of classic elements, including:

  • Classic BGM: The iconic soundtracks that defined the early CrossFire experience.
  • Classic Game Lobby: A return to the familiar interface of the 2012 era.
  • Classic UI: An effort to meticulously recreate the user interface of the past.
  • GP Compatibility: Game Points (GP) earned in the main game mode will be usable in the Nostalgia Mode.

According to IT Home, citing official announcements, the Nostalgia Mode will be available for a limited time of three months. The initial release, version 1.0, will be rolled out in two stages, with additional content unlocked in June. The first release will include a variety of classic game modes, such as:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Bomb Defusal
  • Zombie Mode
  • Challenge Mode
  • Ghost Mode

Furthermore, numerous classic maps that have been removed from the current version of the game will be making a comeback.

The launch of the Nostalgia Mode reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry: the embrace of retro experiences. By stripping away modern additions and focusing on the core gameplay, CrossFire aims to recapture the magic that made it a global phenomenon. Whether this experiment will resonate with both veteran players and newcomers remains to be seen, but the anticipation surrounding the release is undeniable. The promise of a simpler, more skill-based CrossFire experience is a compelling draw for those seeking a break from the complexities of modern FPS titles.
