Guangdong, China – In a significant leap forward for emergency communication capabilities, Guangdong Broadcasting Network (GDBCN) has successfully conducted the nation’s first test flight of a 5G emergency drone operating on the 700MHz frequency band. This breakthrough, announced on GDBCN’s official WeChat account and brought to light by IT Home user Zhu丶工作室, promises to revolutionize disaster relief efforts by ensuring reliable voice and SMS communication in affected areas.

The test, conducted on March 22nd off the coast of Shangchuan Island in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, demonstrated the drone’s robust performance. Flying at an altitude of 4,000 meters with a 4.8-kilometer operational radius, the drone maintained a strong signal strength (RSRP of approximately -92dBm), effectively covering an area of 72 square kilometers. This coverage area and signal strength represent a two-to-threefold improvement over conventional emergency communication solutions.

The significance of the 700MHz frequency band lies in its favorable propagation characteristics. Often referred to as the golden frequency band for communication, 700MHz offers a wide coverage area, strong signal penetration, and relatively low deployment costs. According to GDBCN, this combination makes it ideally suited for ensuring uninterrupted voice and SMS services, critical for coordinating rescue efforts and providing reassurance to those affected by disasters.

Natural disasters and accidents often disrupt ground-based communication networks, leading to the dreaded three disconnections – power, internet, and cellular service. This isolation severely hinders rescue operations and prolongs the suffering of victims. Emergency communication drones offer a vital solution by providing a rapidly deployable and mobile communication hub.

The 700MHz 5G emergency drone developed by GDBCN significantly expands the reach and effectiveness of this solution. Its ability to quickly establish wide-area emergency communication coverage allows disaster-stricken populations to connect with the outside world, report their situations, and receive crucial information. This enhanced connectivity is expected to significantly improve the overall efficiency and timeliness of China’s emergency communication and disaster relief system.

This successful test flight marks a crucial step towards a more resilient and responsive emergency communication infrastructure in China. The deployment of 700MHz 5G emergency drones promises to minimize the impact of future disasters by ensuring that communication lines remain open when they are needed most. Further development and widespread adoption of this technology are expected to significantly enhance the safety and well-being of citizens in disaster-prone areas.
