Las Vegas, NV – Michael Jarmain, the newly crowned champion of the Excel World Championship, has thrown down the gauntlet to Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot, asserting that it’s not yet capable of dethroning human Excel masters. The bold statement comes after Jarmain’s victory at the 7th annual championship held at the HyperX Esports Arena in Las Vegas.

The competition, a 40-minute digital battle, saw 12 of the world’s top spreadsheet experts vying for the title. This year’s challenge involved complex modeling and manipulation of data related to World of Warcraft characters, tasking contestants with defeating a final boss through skillful spreadsheet wizardry. Jarmain, representing Canada, narrowly edged out three-time champion Andrew Ng with a score of 905, securing a $5,000 prize and a coveted championship wrestling belt.

Jarmain, a British native who gained notoriety as an Excel guru during his university years, now leads a team within his company that handles intricate infrastructure transactions. His expertise makes him a credible voice in assessing the capabilities of AI tools like Copilot.

The current version of Copilot can only handle basic formulas, Jarmain stated, referencing AI demonstrations he witnessed during the competition. The features that impress the average user are things we can accomplish in three seconds.

While confident in his current abilities, Jarmain acknowledged the potential for future advancements in AI. If AI continues to evolve to the point where it can beat us, then we’re all out of a job, he conceded. I don’t think Copilot currently has any ability to beat me or someone like Andrew.

Throughout the championship, Microsoft showcased videos demonstrating how Copilot can be used to solve problems. This year’s event featured a special World of Warcraft 30th-anniversary themed challenge, requiring contestants to manipulate attributes of characters like warlocks and orcs using multi-tab spreadsheets. The pressure was intensified by a live leaderboard and a five-minute elimination mechanism. In the final moments, Jarmain made a crucial breakthrough, securing a 60-point lead and ending Andrew Ng’s reign.

Jarmain’s victory and his challenge to Copilot highlight the ongoing debate about the role of AI in the workplace. While AI tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated, human expertise and problem-solving skills remain invaluable, particularly in complex and nuanced tasks. The Excel World Championship serves as a testament to the power of human ingenuity and the enduring importance of mastering fundamental tools like spreadsheets.
