Incheon, South Korea – South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ahn Duk-geun, departed for the United States today, March 20th, for discussions regarding South Korea’s inclusion on the U.S. Department of Energy’s sensitive country list. This marks Minister Ahn’s second trip to the US in just three weeks, highlighting the urgency and importance of the matter.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Minister Ahn explained that the designation, which raises concerns about technology security, could potentially hinder technological cooperation within South Korean industries. He emphasized his intention to engage with US counterparts to explore avenues for removing South Korea from the list, aiming to minimize any adverse impact on the nation’s industrial sector.

During his visit to Washington D.C. on March 20th and 21st, Minister Ahn is scheduled to meet with US Commerce Secretary Howard A. Routman and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Key discussions will revolve around addressing US concerns regarding scientific and technological issues. Minister Ahn stated that he will explore potential measures the South Korean government can implement to alleviate these concerns and work towards a constructive resolution.

We will make every effort to eliminate the US’s concerns and negotiate a constructive solution, Ahn told reporters before boarding his flight.

Beyond the sensitive country designation, Minister Ahn also plans to convey the South Korean government’s position on the potential imposition of countervailing duties by the United States. He acknowledged the US’s firm stance on the matter, suggesting difficult negotiations lie ahead.

This visit underscores the complex and evolving dynamics of the US-South Korea relationship, particularly in the realm of technology and trade. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in shaping future cooperation and ensuring the continued competitiveness of South Korean industries on the global stage.
