Munich, Germany – The iconic BMW Z4 roadster is reportedly heading for the sunset. According to a recent report by German automotive publication Automobilwoche, production of the current generation Z4 (G29) is slated to cease in March 2026 at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria, and a direct successor is not expected.

This news, while disappointing for fans of the open-top two-seater, isn’t entirely surprising. The Z4 has faced sluggish sales figures in recent years, fueling speculation about its future within the BMW lineup. The company has been rumored to be considering discontinuing the model once the current G29 generation reaches the end of its lifecycle.

The BMW Z4 boasts a rich history, first debuting in 2003 as the E85 generation. This initial iteration offered both soft-top convertible and hard-top coupe body styles. The E85 was eventually introduced to the Chinese market in 2006, offering the 2.5si and 3.0si soft-top variants, followed by the Coupe version (E86) in 2007.

The second-generation Z4 (E89), perhaps the most recognizable to many, arrived with a retractable hardtop convertible. This generation also featured 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter naturally aspirated engines, although the 3.0-liter variant gained a reputation for reliability issues.

The current, third-generation Z4 (G29) was unveiled in 2018 and launched in China in 2019. This version reverted to a soft-top configuration and is available in two powertrain options: the sDrive25i M, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged B48 engine producing 197 horsepower, and the M40i, equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 engine delivering 340 horsepower.

While the Z4’s potential departure marks the end of an era for BMW roadsters, the company is likely focusing its resources on other segments, particularly electric vehicles, to meet evolving market demands. The Z4’s legacy, however, will remain as a stylish and engaging open-top driving experience.
