Tokyo, March 21 – In a meeting held in Tokyo, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, reached a consensus on revitalizing cultural exchanges and fostering substantive cooperation between their two nations.
The high-level discussion, which took place on March 21st, signals a potential thaw in relations and a renewed focus on strengthening ties through cultural understanding and practical collaboration.
Both ministers agreed to actively work towards restoring cultural exchange programs between South Korea and China. This initiative aims to enhance mutual understanding between the citizens of both countries, ultimately paving the way for deeper and more meaningful cooperation across various sectors. A key component of this effort will be the revitalization of exchanges in all fields, including people-to-people interactions.
The ministers expressed positive assessments of the momentum in South Korea-China relations since the trilateral summit with Japan in May of last year. Recognizing the significance of regional cooperation, both sides pledged to support each other in hosting the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits in their respective countries in 2024 and 2025. This shared commitment will serve as a foundation for deepening exchange and collaboration on a broader scale.
Furthermore, the meeting included discussions regarding a potential visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to South Korea for the APEC summit scheduled to be held in Gyeongju later this year. Both sides agreed to work together to facilitate President Xi’s visit, viewing it as a crucial opportunity to further solidify bilateral relations and chart a course for future cooperation.
This agreement to revitalize cultural exchange and pursue enhanced cooperation marks a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between South Korea and China. The focus on mutual understanding and practical collaboration suggests a commitment to building a more stable and prosperous future for both nations.
