Beijing, China – March 19, 2024 – iDream AI, the AI-powered creative and content platform under ByteDance, has officially launched its Future Image Project: AI Sci-Fi Short Film Collection on March 17th. This initiative aims to foster the development of science fiction filmmaking through the innovative application of artificial intelligence.

The highlight of this project is the opportunity for winning entries to be directly showcased at the inaugural Science Fiction Film International Summit during the 78th Cannes Film Festival, commencing May 13th. Furthermore, the creative teams behind the selected short films will have the unique chance to engage with internationally renowned science fiction directors and producers at the summit.

The Science Fiction Film International Summit, co-hosted by iDream AI, will bring together pioneers and works from the realms of science fiction, fantasy, and the film industry, both from China and abroad. The summit will focus on the creative power and value of innovative technologies like AI in expanding cinematic language, imagination, and expression, ultimately supporting the construction of new narratives for Chinese science fiction films within an international context.

As a key component of the summit, the short film collection is open to science fiction filmmakers. Creators are encouraged to explore diverse sci-fi themes and utilize AI technology in the production of their short films. Submissions must be at least one minute in length, with a minimum of 50% of the content generated using AI.

A panel of judges will evaluate the submissions based on five criteria: visual aesthetics, audio-visual language, character and scene design, plot and pacing, and innovation. The esteemed judging panel includes Su Lun, director and screenwriter of the film How Long Will I Love You, Li Miao, art director of the film Home Coming, and Chen Qiufan, author of the science fiction novel The Waste Tide.

Wang Hongwei, Chairman of the Science Fiction Film Working Committee of the China Film Association, emphasized the growing trend of human-AI collaboration in creative endeavors. AI has the potential to revolutionize the art of cinematic storytelling and the viewing experience, he stated. By combining new technologies with evolving entertainment demands, we may witness the emergence of entirely new art forms.

This initiative represents a significant step in exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and cinematic creativity, offering a promising platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talent on a global stage. The Future Image Project not only encourages innovation in filmmaking but also highlights the increasing role of AI in shaping the future of the entertainment industry.
