Shenzhen, China – Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT continues to evolve, with the latest 5.0.0.135 update for phones and tablets bringing a host of unannounced features alongside the officially released improvements. The 2GB update, already rolling out to devices, includes the much-anticipated return of device-specific themes and introduces music playback controls directly within the Live Window feature.
The update addresses a key concern for users of Huawei’s Mate 60 and Pura 70 series, who saw their unique, pre-installed themes disappear after upgrading to HarmonyOS NEXT. The 135 version reinstates these themes, fully adapted to the new system’s capabilities. Users can once again customize their lock screen widgets, clock styles, and enjoy features like seamless always-on display and redesigned theme icons.
One of the most exciting additions is the integration of music playback controls into the Live Window. Previously, music and video control was limited to the control center (including the lock screen, notification center, and control panel). Now, users can manage their music directly from the Live Window, which appears as a capsule in the upper left corner of the screen, displaying song lyrics. Tapping the capsule expands it into a playback control card, offering options to skip tracks, pause, switch between audio outputs (speakers or headphones), change playback order, view and jump to specific points in the song, and even add the current track to favorites.
The update also brings significant improvements to the -1 screen functionality. Devices updated to 135 now support several features of the new Smart Assistant – Today app, including the ability to add cards, freely arrange services, pin status cards, and customize the order of tools.
However, not all planned features have made it into this release. Integration with the 12306 railway ticketing service for the -1 screen is still pending, although it has been previewed and is expected in a future update. Currently, only Ctrip is supported.
This update demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to refining HarmonyOS NEXT and responding to user feedback. The return of device-specific themes and the addition of music control to the Live Window are significant improvements that enhance the user experience. As HarmonyOS NEXT continues to develop, users can expect further refinements and new features that will solidify its position as a leading mobile operating system.
