Shenzhen, China – March 18, 2025 – The native HarmonyOS version of WeChat, one of China’s most ubiquitous social and payment apps, has received a new beta update, version 1.0.4.37. This update, currently available for invited testers through the Huawei App Gallery, introduces support for viewing group announcements, enhances the mini-program experience, and addresses several known issues.
The beta test period will run from March 18, 2025, to April 17, 2025.
This update marks another step forward in the development of HarmonyOS-native applications, a crucial initiative for Huawei as it seeks to build a robust ecosystem independent of Android. WeChat’s embrace of HarmonyOS is particularly significant, given its massive user base in China.
Key Features of the 1.0.4.37 Update:
- Group Announcement Support: Users can now view group announcements within the native HarmonyOS WeChat app, a feature essential for communication and coordination within groups.
- Improved Mini-Program Experience: The update includes enhancements to the user experience within WeChat’s mini-program ecosystem, allowing for smoother and more seamless interactions with these lightweight applications.
- Bug Fixes: The update also addresses several known issues, contributing to a more stable and reliable user experience.
The native HarmonyOS WeChat app initially launched in January 2025 on the Huawei App Gallery, offering core functionalities such as basic communication, social networking, WeChat Pay, official accounts, mini-programs, video channels, and live streaming.
Currently, the HarmonyOS native WeChat app supports tablet downloads, although dual-device login is not yet available. A Tencent WeChat employee, @客村小蒋, has stated that future versions will address this limitation.
Huawei’s commitment to building a native HarmonyOS ecosystem was highlighted at the Huawei Developer Conference 2024, where the company announced a full-scale push to develop native HarmonyOS applications. The goal is to have the top 5000 apps fully adapted to HarmonyOS, covering 99.9% of user usage time across 18 different sectors.
Several other major Chinese apps, including QQ, Alipay, Taobao, and JD.com, have already developed native HarmonyOS versions. IT Home and its sister product, Zui Hui Mai, released their pure HarmonyOS 1.0 native versions on September 30th.
The development of a native HarmonyOS ecosystem is a strategic imperative for Huawei, allowing it to offer a fully integrated and optimized experience for its users. The addition of key apps like WeChat is a critical step in achieving this goal.
