Seoul, South Korea – The family of the late South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron has filed a lawsuit against YouTuber Lee Jin-ho for defamation, alleging that he spread false information that damaged her reputation. The lawsuit was lodged with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on March 17th, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Lee Jin-ho, a popular YouTuber, has released multiple videos concerning Kim Sae-ron on his channel, spanning from her drunk driving incident in 2022 until her death in February of this year.

In his videos, Lee Jin-ho claimed that Kim Sae-ron was not in a relationship with actor Kim Soo-hyun, despite her having posted a photo on social media that seemed to hint at a romantic connection between the two. He further accused her of directing and acting out a farce. Kim Sae-ron’s family contends that these claims constitute the dissemination of false information and have harmed her reputation.

This legal action follows a recent controversy sparked by another South Korean media outlet, Institute Garo Sero, which alleged on March 10th that Kim Soo-hyun had been in a relationship with Kim Sae-ron, starting in 2015 when she was only 15 years old. The outlet claimed the relationship lasted for six years and released a photo of the two together, along with screenshots of text messages purportedly sent by Kim Sae-ron to Kim Soo-hyun.

Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, GOLDMEDALIST, released a statement on March 14th acknowledging Kim Soo-hyun’s past relationship with the late Kim Sae-ron. However, the agency emphasized that the relationship has ended.

The lawsuit filed by Kim Sae-ron’s family highlights the growing concern over the spread of misinformation and its impact on individuals and their families, particularly in the age of social media and online broadcasting. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the responsibilities and liabilities of online content creators in South Korea.
