Seoul, March 16 (Yonhap) – South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) will accept the Constitutional Court’s verdict on the impeachment case against President Yoon Suk-yeol, the party’s floor leader Kwon Seong-dong stated on March 16.
Kwon made the remarks during a meeting with reporters at the National Assembly, signaling a unified stance within the PPP regardless of the outcome of the highly anticipated ruling.
The party will accept the Constitutional Court’s decision, Kwon affirmed.
The statement comes amid calls from some political figures for a joint statement from both the ruling and opposition leadership, expressing their commitment to accepting the court’s judgment. Kwon indicated the PPP’s willingness to cooperate, stating, We have expressed our willingness to issue a statement in the form requested by the Democratic Party.
The impeachment proceedings against President Yoon have been a source of significant political turmoil in South Korea. The Constitutional Court’s decision holds immense weight, as it will determine the future of the presidency and the stability of the nation’s government.
In related news, Kwon addressed the issue of the United States designating South Korea as a sensitive country. He lamented that the optimal time for the government to address the matter had passed, given that both the President and Prime Minister had been suspended from their duties for over 80 days. Kwon urged the Constitutional Court to either dismiss or reject the impeachment motion against Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on the same day.
The political landscape in South Korea remains tense as the nation awaits the Constitutional Court’s decision on the impeachment case. The ruling party’s commitment to accepting the verdict is a crucial step towards maintaining stability and upholding the rule of law.
