Rikaze, Tibet Autonomous Region, March 5, 2025 – Despite the widespread disruption caused by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in January, over 47,300 students in the affected region of Tibet Autonomous Region have returned to their classrooms on schedule for the spring semester. This remarkable achievement underscores the resilience of the local communities and the effectiveness of the disaster relief efforts.

According to officials in Rikaze City, the earthquake impacted a total of 243 schools across five counties: Dingri, Lazi, Dingjie, Saga, and Angren. The total student population affected numbered 47,600. On March 5th, the official start date of the spring semester, all but 308 students, who were absent due to illness or other personal reasons, were present and accounted for, marking a significant step towards normalcy.

The swift return to education is a testament to the coordinated efforts of local authorities, educators, and community members. Following the earthquake, immediate assessments were conducted to evaluate the structural integrity of school buildings and identify any necessary repairs. Resources were rapidly mobilized to ensure that schools could reopen safely and promptly.

The prompt resumption of classes demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Tibetan people to education, even in the face of adversity, stated a Rikaze City official. It is a powerful symbol of hope and a clear indication that the region is on the path to recovery.

The earthquake, while disruptive, has also highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness and community resilience. Lessons learned from this experience will undoubtedly inform future efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on education and other essential services.

The successful reopening of schools in the earthquake-affected region of Tibet sends a strong message of hope and determination. It is a reminder that even in the wake of devastation, the pursuit of knowledge and the well-being of students remain a top priority.
