Seoul, South Korea – Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD’s highly anticipated launch of its first model in South Korea, the all-electric compact SUV ATTO 3 (known as Yuan PLUS in some markets), has been delayed due to uncertainties surrounding government subsidies. This postponement has caused inconvenience for consumers who had already pre-ordered the vehicle, according to Yonhap News Agency.

BYD Korea completed the necessary certification process for the ATTO 3 on February 12th and subsequently launched pre-sales on February 16th at a brand launch event. The vehicle garnered significant initial interest, exceeding 1,000 pre-orders in its first week. However, deliveries have yet to commence.

The delay stems from the complex regulatory landscape for EVs in South Korea. In addition to certifications from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Environment, electric vehicles must also be eligible for government subsidies to be competitive in the market. The amount of these subsidies can significantly impact the final price for consumers, making them a crucial factor in purchase decisions.

The ATTO 3’s delay highlights the challenges foreign automakers face when entering the South Korean market, particularly in the EV sector. While BYD has made significant strides in the global EV market, becoming a major competitor to companies like Tesla, navigating the intricacies of South Korean regulations and subsidy programs remains a hurdle.

The uncertainty surrounding the ATTO 3’s subsidy eligibility leaves potential buyers in limbo. The delay could impact BYD’s initial market penetration strategy in South Korea, a market with a growing appetite for electric vehicles but also strong competition from domestic brands like Hyundai and Kia.

The situation underscores the importance of clear and predictable government policies in fostering a healthy and competitive EV market. As BYD works to resolve the subsidy issue, the South Korean automotive industry will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds and what impact it will have on the future of foreign EV brands in the country.
