Tokyo, Japan – Nintendo has confirmed that its popular game vouchers (任亏券), a perk for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, will not be applicable for purchasing exclusive titles on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This announcement, delivered via an update to the Nintendo official website, has stirred disappointment among gamers who anticipated using the vouchers to acquire games for the new console.
The game vouchers, affectionately dubbed 任亏券 (literally loss-making tickets) by Chinese players, allow subscribers to exchange one voucher for two Nintendo Switch games. They have been a cost-effective way for players to expand their game libraries.
The news arrives as anticipation builds for the Switch 2, slated for release sometime in 2025. Nintendo announced last month that the next-generation console was on the horizon.
This development follows a prior announcement from Nintendo stating that it will discontinue awarding My Nintendo Gold Points on game purchases starting March 25, 2025. This means that after the specified date and time, purchasing games will no longer earn players Gold Points, further impacting the perceived value of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription for some users.
While the news regarding the vouchers has been met with some frustration, there is still excitement surrounding the Switch 2. As previously reported, Nintendo is rumored to hold a dedicated Nintendo Direct event on April 2nd at 9 PM (likely Japan Standard Time) to showcase the new console. This event is expected to offer a closer look at the Switch 2’s features and capabilities.
Adding a silver lining to the situation, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will support original Nintendo Switch game cartridges. This backward compatibility will allow existing Switch owners to transition to the new console without having to repurchase their entire game library, a move that will undoubtedly ease the financial burden for loyal fans.
Reports suggest that the Switch 2 will feature design changes, including a larger screen and a new magnetic attachment system for the Joy-Con controllers, potentially offering a more secure and stable connection. Furthermore, the console is rumored to include a second USB-C port on the top.
While the limitations on the game vouchers are a setback for some, the confirmed backward compatibility and anticipated advancements in the Switch 2 hardware are keeping excitement high for Nintendo’s next chapter in gaming. The April 2nd Nintendo Direct is poised to be a pivotal moment, offering a clearer picture of what the future holds for Nintendo fans.
