Beijing – Moonshot AI, the technology company behind the popular Kimi AI assistant, has announced the release of its latest model, Kimi Latest, along with its simultaneous launch on the Kimi Open Platform. This strategic move aims to align the capabilities of the open platform with the cutting-edge features of the Kimi AI assistant, addressing the diverging needs of different user groups.

Since its public beta launch on January 31, 2024, the Kimi Open Platform has relied on the moonshot-v1 series models to provide robust large language model (LLM) generation capabilities for both the Kimi AI assistant and a wide array of developers and enterprise users. However, as the platform evolved, Moonshot AI recognized a growing divergence in the requirements of the Kimi AI assistant and its open platform users.

Addressing the Divergence:

The core challenge stemmed from the differing priorities of the two user groups. The Kimi AI assistant demanded responses with greater emotional intelligence, catering to user interaction and engagement. Conversely, open platform users often sought efficient extraction of structured data from text, requiring precise JSON output. Prioritizing the AI assistant’s needs sometimes led to destructive changes like prompt failures for open platform users, conflicting with the platform’s focus on model stability.

Furthermore, the rapid iteration of the Kimi AI assistant introduced experimental features that, while promising in some areas, exhibited limitations in others, such as repetitive word or sentence output. These features were deemed unsuitable for immediate deployment on the open platform. This discrepancy resulted in users noticing subtle differences between responses generated by the Kimi web version and those obtained through the Kimi API using the same prompts.

Introducing Kimi Latest: A Unified Solution:

To resolve these challenges, Moonshot AI has introduced Kimi Latest, a new model designed to mirror the current model powering the Kimi AI assistant. This ensures that the open platform is consistently updated with the latest advancements, including experimental features, while maintaining the stability of existing models.

Key Features of Kimi Latest:

  • Always Up-to-Date: Kimi Latest will always utilize the most current Kimi LLM, incorporating even experimental features.
  • Extensive Context Window: Supports a 128k context window, dynamically selecting 8k, 32k, or 128k models for billing based on context length.
  • Image Understanding: Equipped with visual capabilities, enabling image comprehension.
  • Automatic Context Caching: Features automatic context caching, reducing token costs for cached tokens to ¥1/M (manual context caching is not yet supported).
  • Consistent Functionality: Retains existing functionalities from the moonshot-v1 series, including ToolCalls, JSON Mode, Partial Mode, and internet search capabilities.

Implications and Future Outlook:

The launch of Kimi Latest represents a significant step towards unifying the Kimi AI ecosystem. By providing open platform users with access to the latest model advancements while preserving stability, Moonshot AI is empowering developers and enterprises to leverage the full potential of Kimi’s LLM technology.

This move is likely to foster greater innovation and collaboration within the Kimi ecosystem, enabling developers to build more sophisticated and versatile applications. The continuous alignment of the open platform with the Kimi AI assistant will also ensure a consistent and cutting-edge user experience across all Kimi products.

As Moonshot AI continues to refine and expand the capabilities of Kimi Latest, it will be crucial to monitor user feedback and address any emerging challenges. The company’s commitment to bridging the gap between AI assistant and open platform development positions it as a key player in the rapidly evolving landscape of large language models.
