Beijing, February 18, 2025 – The China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNMIA) has expressed its strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the United States government’s decision to adjust tariffs on aluminum imports. The announcement, made on February 10th (US Eastern Time) and subsequently detailed in the Federal Register, sees the US reinstating Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from global trading partners and further increasing import duties on aluminum products.

We are deeply concerned and firmly against this misguided action by the US government, the CNMIA stated on its official website.

The US move marks a reversal of previous policies and raises concerns about potential disruptions to global aluminum trade. The CNMIA’s strong statement underscores the potential for escalating trade tensions between the two economic powerhouses.

The CNMIA is the leading industry association representing China’s nonferrous metals sector, playing a crucial role in guiding industry development and representing the interests of its members. Its strong condemnation of the US tariff adjustments signals the significant impact these measures are expected to have on Chinese aluminum producers and exporters.

The implications of these tariffs extend beyond the immediate economic impact. They raise questions about the future of global trade relations and the potential for further protectionist measures. The CNMIA’s statement highlights the need for continued dialogue and cooperation to address trade imbalances and avoid escalating trade conflicts.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as both governments assess the impact of these measures and consider potential responses. The global aluminum market will be closely watching for any signs of further escalation or potential avenues for negotiation.
