Bose, Guangxi, China – A new contingent of medical professionals from Guangxi Province, China, has set off on a mission to bring light and hope to the people of Laos. The Guangxi 10th Medical Team for Cataract Blindness Elimination in Laos, supported by the Sharing Foundation, departed from Bose, Guangxi, on February 17th, 2025, for a 46-day medical assistance mission in Vientiane, Laos.
This initiative, officially known as the Cataract Blindness Elimination Project in Laos, is a collaborative effort between the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Health Commission, the Sharing Foundation, and the Lao Ministry of Health. Since its launch in September 2022, the project has been dedicated to providing much-needed eye care and surgical interventions to combat cataract-related blindness in Laos.
Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, are a leading cause of blindness worldwide, particularly in developing countries where access to quality eye care is limited. The Guangxi medical team’s mission is to address this critical need by providing free cataract surgeries and related medical services to Lao citizens.
This latest deployment underscores China’s commitment to strengthening its ties with ASEAN nations through humanitarian and healthcare initiatives. By sharing its medical expertise and resources, Guangxi is playing a vital role in improving the quality of life for the people of Laos and fostering goodwill between the two countries.
The team’s efforts are expected to have a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals, restoring their sight and enabling them to fully participate in their communities. This Sending Light mission exemplifies the spirit of international cooperation and the power of healthcare to transcend borders and improve lives.
