Cupertino, CA – Apple is reportedly ramping up development of the next iteration of its Studio Display, aiming for a potential release in 2026 alongside Macs powered by the M5 chip, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The new Studio Display, internally codenamed J427, is expected to maintain a similar design to the current 27-inch model. Gurman did not disclose any specific new features or changes planned for the upcoming display.

However, display industry analyst Ross Young suggested last week that Apple is working on a new 27-inch display with Mini LED technology, potentially launching in late 2025 or early 2026. Young believes this display could be a new version of the Studio Display featuring Mini LED backlighting.

As a reference, the current Apple Studio Display was released in March 2022 alongside the first Mac Studio. It features a 27-inch 5K Retina display with a 60Hz refresh rate, P3 wide color gamut, up to 600 nits of brightness, a built-in camera and speakers, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. The Studio Display is currently priced starting at $1599.

The potential inclusion of Mini LED technology in the next Studio Display would represent a significant upgrade, offering improved contrast, brightness, and color accuracy. This move would align with Apple’s strategy of incorporating advanced display technologies across its product lineup.

While Gurman’s report suggests a continuation of the current design, the possibility of Mini LED technology, as suggested by Young, indicates that Apple is exploring ways to enhance the visual experience of the Studio Display.

The launch of a new Studio Display alongside M5-powered Macs in 2026 would mark a significant refresh for Apple’s desktop ecosystem, offering users a compelling combination of performance and visual fidelity.
