Seoul, South Korea – In a move that further escalates tensions on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea has begun dismantling the reunion facilities for separated families at the Mount Kumgang tourist zone, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry. This marks the removal of the last remaining South Korean-owned facility in the area, signaling a significant setback for inter-Korean cooperation and humanitarian efforts.

The government has confirmed that North Korea is dismantling the Mount Kumgang reunion facility, Unification Ministry spokesperson Koo Byoung-sam stated in a press briefing on Tuesday. This facility was built through inter-Korean consultation, and we express deep regret over the North’s unilateral dismantling and strongly urge them to immediately cease this action.

The Mount Kumgang tourist zone, once a symbol of reconciliation and cooperation between the two Koreas, has become a casualty of deteriorating relations. The reunions held at the facility offered a rare opportunity for families separated by the Korean War to meet, often for the first and last time. The dismantling of this venue effectively eliminates a crucial avenue for these emotionally charged and deeply meaningful encounters.

The Unification Ministry’s statement condemned the move as an anti-humanitarian act that tramples on the wishes of separated families and a significant infringement on South Korean state property. The statement further emphasized that North Korea’s unilateral action cannot be justified under any circumstances and that Pyongyang will bear full responsibility for the consequences. The South Korean government has vowed to pursue legal measures and consult with the international community to address the situation.

This latest development underscores the deepening chasm between the two Koreas. Relations have been strained for years, particularly since the collapse of denuclearization talks between North Korea and the United States. Pyongyang has increasingly turned away from engagement with Seoul, opting instead to focus on developing its nuclear and missile programs.

The dismantling of the reunion facility represents a symbolic and tangible blow to inter-Korean reconciliation efforts. It raises serious concerns about the future of dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, particularly on humanitarian issues. While the South Korean government has pledged to explore all possible avenues to address the situation, the prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain. The international community will be watching closely to see how this latest development impacts the already fragile peace and security landscape on the Korean Peninsula.
