Seoul, February 7 (Yonhap) – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for local hospital and education/cultural facility construction projects on February 6th, emphasizing the need to address the imbalance between urban and rural development.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on February 7th, Kim Jong-un attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kangdong County hospital and comprehensive service complex construction project and delivered a speech.
Kim Jong-un highlighted that the most significant disparities between urban and rural areas lie in healthcare and scientific education. He stressed the urgency of establishing healthcare facilities and multi-functional cultural centers in major cities and counties.
Kim Jong-un announced pilot hospital construction projects in Kangdong County, Ryonggang County, and Kuju City this year. He also outlined a plan to build 20 city/county-level hospitals annually starting next year.
He further encouraged the soldiers of the Guards Unit and the 124th Regiment under the Capital Defense Command, who were deployed to the hospital and comprehensive service complex construction projects.
In January of last year, Kim Jong-un announced the Local Development 20×10 Policy, proposing to promote construction in 20 cities and counties every year. This initiative underscores the regime’s focus on addressing regional disparities and improving the quality of life for citizens in rural areas. The success of these projects remains to be seen, but the commitment signals a potential shift in resource allocation and development priorities within North Korea.
