China Tests 1-Pulls-2 Autonomous Trucking Convoy on Xiong’an Expressway
A groundbreaking experiment on the Jingxiong Expressway in Xiong’an New Area showcases China’s advancements in intelligent vehicle-road coordination (IVRC) technology.
For the past two weeks, a three-truckconvoy has been undergoing autonomous driving tests as part of a national research initiative. This isn’t your typical self-driving car trial; this involves a 1-pulls-2 system, where a human-driven lead truck guides two fully autonomous following trucks along a 109-kilometer stretch of the Jingxiong Expressway in Hebei province. According to CCTV News, the test has already covered over 500 kilometers, demonstrating significant progress in automated freight transportation.
The innovative approach contrasts sharply with previous single-vehicle autonomous driving tests. In this experiment, three large trucks, maintaining closer proximity thanwould be typical in human-driven convoys, navigated toll booths and cruised the expressway. While the lead driver maintains control of their vehicle, the drivers in the two trailing trucks have their hands off the wheel, relying entirely on the automated system. A project expert described this 1-pulls-2 model as a crucial step towards the future of autonomous freight transport.
This ambitious project extends beyond simple highway driving. The tests, expected to accumulate over 10,000 kilometers within a year, will encompass diverse cargo transportation scenarios. This comprehensive approach aims to gather invaluable real-world dataand refine the technology for large-scale logistics applications.
Facilitating this advanced testing is a dedicated infrastructure. The designated 109-kilometer autonomous driving lane (spanning both directions of the expressway) is equipped with data collection poles strategically placed every 800 meters. A central monitoring facility providesreal-time tracking of the convoy, allowing operators to monitor the trucks’ progress and intervene if necessary, ensuring safety throughout the testing phase.
The successful initial phase of this project underscores China’s commitment to technological innovation in the transportation sector. The data collected from this extensive testing program will be instrumental in refining autonomousdriving technology, paving the way for safer, more efficient, and potentially more cost-effective freight transport in the future. Further research and development will likely focus on expanding the operational range, enhancing safety protocols, and addressing potential challenges related to diverse weather conditions and complex traffic scenarios.
