China Unveils Jiang Hai – World’s Largest Diameter Road Tunnel BoringMachine

A colossal feat of engineering arrives in Nantong, marking a significantstep in the construction of the HaiTai Yangtze River Tunnel.

On December 3rd, 2024, a crucial component of the Jiang Hai tunnel boring machine (TBM) – its massive cutterhead – arrived in Nantong, Jiangsu province, marking a pivotal moment in the construction ofthe ambitious HaiTai Yangtze River Tunnel. The cutterhead, a vital part of the TBM responsible for excavating the tunnel, was transported via a complex water-land operation, showcasing the logistical challenges inherent in this mega-project.

Following its completion in Changshaon October 31st, 2024, the TBM underwent disassembly for easier transportation. The various components then embarked on a complex journey, utilizing different transport methods to reach their final destination in Nantong’s Haimen district. The subsequent reassembly and testing phases will be crucial before theTBM begins its arduous task of excavating the tunnel.

The HaiTai Yangtze River Tunnel project itself is equally ambitious. Stretching 39.07 kilometers, connecting Haimen District in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, to Taicang City in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, the tunnel will significantly improve transportationlinks across the Yangtze River estuary. The under-river section, spanning 11.185 kilometers, will be a six-lane highway designed for speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour. Crucially, the 9,315-meter-long shield tunnel section willbecome the world’s longest underwater road tunnel upon completion.

This project represents a significant advancement in China’s infrastructure capabilities, demonstrating its prowess in developing and deploying cutting-edge technologies for large-scale infrastructure projects.
