Chengdu Launches Crackdown on Misinformation in Local Online Forums

Chengdu,Sichuan Province – In a concerted effort to cleanse its online environment, Chengducity authorities convened a special meeting on November 22nd to launch a targeted campaign against misinformation and harmful content within local online forums and platforms. The initiative, part of the nationwide “Clear and Bright” (Qinglang) campaign, underscores a growing national focus on regulating online content and combating the spread of false information.

The meeting, held under the guidance of the Sichuan Provincial Cyberspace Administration, brought together over 60 representatives from various city-level departments, including education, public security, housing and urban-rural development, culture and tourism,and market supervision. Key national internet platforms with a presence in Chengdu, such as Kuaishou and Meituan, along with local platforms like Migu Music, Gudong, and Xishanju, also participated.

Chengdu’s Cyberspace Administration relayed directives from higher authorities, outlining the scope and objectives of the “Clear and Bright” campaign focusing on local online forums. Representatives from various government departments then detailed their roles in the crackdown. The education sector pledged to address fraudulent recruitment advertisements, while public security agencies committed to combating onlinerumors and misinformation. Market regulators outlined plans to strengthen oversight of online transactions.

Several major online platforms, including Douyin Sichuan (TikTok’s Sichuan branch), Sina Sichuan, and Chengdu Huanjutang, publicly committed to implementing the campaign’s requirements. These platforms pledged to enhance content moderation mechanisms, optimize recommendationalgorithms to reduce the visibility of harmful content, and proactively identify and remove illegal or inappropriate information.

The meeting emphasized the importance of addressing public concerns and integrating online governance with broader city administration. Participants stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration, information sharing, and joint enforcement to effectively combat illegal online activities. Websiteplatforms were urged to assume their responsibilities, improve content review systems, and cultivate a healthier online environment within their local forums.

The initiative has already garnered significant public support, with numerous online comments praising the move and expressing hope for sustained action. The campaign reflects a broader national trend towards stricter online content regulation and acommitment to fostering a more responsible and trustworthy online environment in China.
