Seoul, November 19, 2024 – SouthKorea’s Deputy Minister of National Defense, Kim Sun-ho, will attend the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Vientiane, Laos, on November 21st, the Ministry of National Defense announced today.

The ADMM-Plus brings together defenseministers from the ten ASEAN member states, along with eight dialogue partners: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, and the United States. This year’s meeting will focus on collaborative strategies to maintainregional peace and stability. A key agenda item will be the escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, Deputy Minister Kim will strongly condemn North Korea’s alleged provision of military aid to Russia, aclaim vehemently denied by Pyongyang. He will further urge the international community to collaboratively thwart any illicit military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. This statement comes amidst heightened global concerns regarding the potential implications of such a partnership on regional security.

Originally, Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup was scheduled to attend the ADMM-Plus. However, the Ministry cited the current tense geopolitical situation and President Yoon Suk-yeol’s overseas trip as reasons for the change in representation. The Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong presence at the meeting despite the shift in delegation leadership.

The ADMM-Plus serves as a crucial platform for dialogueand cooperation on regional security issues. The meeting’s outcomes will likely have significant implications for the future trajectory of regional security architecture in East Asia. Deputy Minister Kim’s participation underscores South Korea’s commitment to multilateral engagement and its role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. His condemnation of North Korea’s alleged actions will likely further strain already tense relations between the two countries.
