OpenAI, thecompany behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has acquired the domain name chat.com for an undisclosed sum. This move signifies a strategic shift for OpenAI, making the domain the official entry point for ChatGPT.
Previously owned by HubSpotco-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah, chat.com was purchased by Shah in 2023 for $10 million. Shah, a visionaryin the field of user experience, saw the potential of ChatUX – a natural language interface for interacting with software – as the next big trend in technology. He believed this potential was fueled by the rise of generative AI.
However,just months after acquiring the domain, Shah announced its sale without disclosing the buyer or transaction details. Now, NameBio, a domain name transaction database, reveals that chat.com was sold for $15.5 million on March 28, 2023. TechCrunch confirmed that OpenAI was the buyer.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the acquisition on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, simply posting the URL chat.com. Clicking the link redirects users to the official ChatGPT website.
