Trump Seeks to Reshape Ukraine Policy, Sparking Concerns Among Allies
Washington/Moscow, November 10, 2024 -As Donald Trump prepares for a potential second term, reports suggest he is seeking to significantly alter US policy towards Ukraine, raising anxieties among Western allies.
According toBloomberg, Trump has already begun to reshape Washington’s approach to the conflict, even before his inauguration. The news outlet cites a recent phone call between Trump and Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelensky, during which Trump reportedly handed the phone to Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul who has played a crucial role in providing satellite communication services to Ukraine.
Musk’s involvement in the call, coupled with his subsequent tweet about Trump’s Ukraine plan, has fueled speculation about a potential shift in US policy. Musk stated, The pointless killing will soon end. The war profiteers’ time is over.
Trump’s senior advisor, Brian Lanza, further solidified these concerns in an interview with the BBC, stating that Trump will focus on achieving peace in Ukraine, not on helping the country reclaim territories occupied by Russia.
These pronouncements have sparked alarm among Western allies, particularly in Europe. Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, visited Kyiv on November 9th, emphasizing Europe’s continued support for Ukraine.
However, cracks in the Western alliance are appearing. Following the US Pentagon’s rejection of Ukraine’s request for additional Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), the UK government, traditionally a staunch US ally, hasannounced a delay in providing long-range missiles to Ukraine.
Responding to Trump’s stance on Ukraine, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, indicated that Moscow is open to listening seriously to Trump’s proposals for resolving the Ukrainian issue.
Musk’s Growing Influence
The details of the phone call between Trump, Zelensky, and Musk highlight the growing influence of the tech entrepreneur within the potential Trump administration. Axios reports that the call underscores the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s stance on Ukraine.
During his campaign, Trump had promised to end the conflict within 24 hours of taking officeand criticized the Biden administration’s massive aid package to Ukraine. These past statements have raised alarm bells in Kyiv and European capitals.
Concerns and Implications
The potential shift in US policy towards Ukraine carries significant implications for the conflict and the broader geopolitical landscape.
- Peace Negotiations: Trump’s focus onachieving peace could potentially lead to renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. However, the details of his Ukraine plan remain unclear, raising concerns about potential concessions to Russia.
- Western Unity: The potential for a US withdrawal from active support for Ukraine could strain the Western alliance, potentially leading to a weakening ofsanctions against Russia and a shift in the balance of power in Europe.
- Russia’s Response: Moscow’s willingness to engage with Trump’s proposals suggests that Russia may be open to a negotiated settlement. However, the potential for a more assertive Russian stance in the absence of strong US support cannot be ruled out.
The coming months will be crucial in determining the future of the conflict in Ukraine and the trajectory of US foreign policy under a potential Trump administration.
