North Korea’s GPS Jamming Disrupts South Korean Flights and Ships
Seoul, South Korea – North Korea has been intermittently jamming GPS signals in theYellow Sea since last month, disrupting the operations of multiple South Korean ships and dozens of civilian aircraft, according to the South Korean military.
The most recent interference occurred on November8th and 9th, directly targeting GPS systems in the areas of Haesung City in South Hwanghae Province and Kaesong City, locatedon the border between North and South Korea. This resulted in navigational disruptions for South Korean vessels and aircraft operating in the region.
This is not the first time North Korea has targeted South Korea’s GPS systems. In late May and early Juneof this year, North Korea launched a series of garbage balloons over South Korea and interfered with GPS signals along the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea for five consecutive days. Based on the direction and strength of the interferencesignals, the GPS attacks were clearly aimed at provoking South Korea.
The military stated that the current GPS jamming, which began in early October, is more intense than the previous incidents. The increased intensity and frequency of these attacks raise concerns about North Korea’s escalating aggression and its potential to disrupt critical infrastructure and civilian operations.
Experts believe that North Korea’s GPS jamming is a deliberate act of provocation aimed at demonstrating its military capabilities and intimidating South Korea. The attacks also highlight the vulnerability of GPS systems to interference and the potential for disruption in critical sectors like transportation and communication.
The South Korean government has condemned North Korea’s actions and called foran immediate cessation of the GPS jamming. The government is also taking steps to enhance its countermeasures and mitigate the impact of future attacks.
This incident underscores the growing tension on the Korean Peninsula and the need for international cooperation to address North Korea’s aggressive behavior.
