Windows 11’s Right-Click Menu Gets Bloated: Editwith Paint Option Added

Microsoft’s commitment to simplifying the Windows 11right-click menu seems to be fading as the company continues to add more options, leading to a cluttered experience.

Three years ago, when Microsoft launched Windows 11, they promised a redesigned right-click menu that would streamline user interaction. However, recent developments suggest a departure from this initial goal. The right-click menuin Windows 11 is now overflowing with redundant options, contradicting Microsoft’s original vision of simplification.

Instead of integrating new features into the Open with submenu, Microsoft has opted to directly add multiple Edit with options to themain menu. For instance, alongside the standard Open with option, users are now presented with additional choices including Notepad, the Photos app, Clipchamp video editor, and now, the newly added Paint.

The latest update to thePaint app, version 11.2410.28.0, introduces a Edit with Paint option in the right-click menu for image files. While this change wasn’t explicitly mentioned in official announcements, users quickly discovered that installing this Paint version adds the Edit with Paint optionto the right-click menu for image files.

This approach differs from how Notepad is handled, which is recommended for editing various file types like .exe, PDF, and videos in Windows 11, leading to user dissatisfaction. The Edit with Paint option is currently limited to Windows Insiders previewmembers.

Similar to the previous additions of Notepad, Clipchamp, and the Photos app, users can remove the Edit with Paint option by deleting the corresponding CLSID entry in the Windows registry.

Beyond the right-click menu addition, the recent Paint update brings several new features, including AI-generatedimage filling, generative erasure functionality, and improvements to Cocreator.

This trend of adding numerous options to the right-click menu raises concerns about user experience and contradicts Microsoft’s initial promise of simplification. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will address these concerns and strive to maintain a streamlined right-click menuin future Windows 11 updates.
