Free Gifts Scam Targets Rural Residents: Police Bust Ring Exploiting Personal Information

乐山, Sichuan Province – A seemingly innocuous offer of free gifts hasensnared unsuspecting rural residents in a sophisticated scheme involving the theft of personal information, highlighting the growing threat of online scams targeting vulnerable populations.

The SichuanProvincial Public Security Bureau’s Cyber Security Department recently cracked down on a criminal ring operating under the guise of village outreach programs. This group, led byindividuals identified as Su and Xu, would pose as government officials, enticing villagers with promises of free gifts in exchange for their personal information.

Scan this QR code and get a free gift! – this enticing phrase, often displayed atvillage entrances and public spaces, served as the lure for unsuspecting victims.

The investigation revealed a complex network of individuals involved in the scheme. The village outreach team, acting as the front line, would collect sensitive data from unsuspecting villagers, includingtheir ID numbers, phone numbers, and even facial recognition information. This data was then sold to upstream individuals, who used it to create and sell real-name verified online accounts.

The scheme’s success relied on exploiting the trust and naiveté of rural residents, many of whom are unfamiliar withonline security practices. The promise of free gifts, a common tactic used by scammers, proved irresistible to some, leading them to unwittingly compromise their personal information.

Police Action and Prevention

The crackdown, which resulted in the arrest of 32 suspects and the dismantling of five studios and four village outreachteams, sent a strong message against such criminal activities. Authorities seized over 587 electronic devices, 12,000 online payment accounts, and 10,000 real-name verified accounts, with the total value of the stolen assets estimated at over 1.5 million yuan.

The investigation exposed the intricate web of criminal activity, highlighting the need for increased awareness and vigilance among vulnerable populations.

Cyber Security Tips

Police are urging residents, particularly the elderly, to be cautious of too good to be true offers. They emphasize the importance of protecting personal information, including IDcards, bank cards, and online accounts.

Never share your personal information with strangers, and be wary of anyone asking for your phone to perform a task, advises a spokesperson for the Cyber Security Department. If you encounter suspicious activity, report it to the authorities immediately.

This case serves as a stark reminderof the evolving nature of cybercrime and the need for ongoing education and awareness campaigns to protect individuals from falling victim to online scams.
