Autumn’s Delight: Sakura Shrimp Season Begins in Shizuoka

Shizuoka, Japan – The much-anticipated autumn season for Sakura shrimp, a delicacynative to Suruga Bay, has officially begun in Shizuoka Prefecture. On November 5th, two fishing ports in Shizuoka City held the firstauctions of the season, marking the start of a period of bountiful harvests.

This year, approximately 2.3 tons of Sakura shrimp were put up for auction,a notable increase of over 1.1 tons compared to the same period last year. The average price at the Yui fishing port settled at around ¥75,000 per 15kg box, a slight decrease of ¥11,000 compared to last year.

The resurgence of Sakura shrimp populations is a testament to the efforts of local fishing cooperatives. In recent years, the catch had been declining, prompting the cooperatives to implement measures such as limiting theharvest of young shrimp. These conservation efforts are now bearing fruit, as evidenced by the increasing catch and a hopeful outlook for the future.

Sakura shrimp, known for their delicate flavor and beautiful pink hue, are a prized ingredient in Japanese cuisine. They are often enjoyed as tempura, sashimi, or as a topping forrice dishes. The autumn season, with its cooler waters, is considered the prime time for catching Sakura shrimp, as their flavor is said to be at its peak.

The autumn Sakura shrimp fishing season will continue until December 25th, offering a delightful culinary experience for seafood enthusiasts throughout Japan. As the season progresses, it is expected that the demand for these prized crustaceans will continue to grow, bringing further economic benefits to the local fishing communities.
