Alibaba Global Math Competition Final Results Announced: Jiang Ping Disqualified for Violating Rules
Hangzhou, China – The results of the 2024Alibaba Global Math Competition finals have been announced, with 86 contestants receiving awards. The competition saw five gold medalists, ten silver medalists, twenty bronze medalists,and fifty-one honorable mentions. Notably, Jiang Ping, the 17-year-old junior college student who garnered significant attention during the preliminary rounds,was disqualified from the competition.
Unlike the preliminary round, which did not have specific categories, the finals were divided into five tracks: Algebra and Number Theory, Geometry and Topology, Analysis and Equations, Combinatorics and Probability, and Computational and Applied Mathematics. Each track awarded one gold medal, two silver medals, four bronze medals, and ten honorable mentions.
The five gold medalists are Cui Xiaoyu and Jie Yaoping from Peking University, Chen Bowen from the University of Maryland, College Park,and Jiang Cheng and Chen Lingyi from Tsinghua University. Each gold medalist received a prize of $30,000. All previous gold medalists have achieved scores above 100 in the finals, with some even achieving perfect scores. This year, Peking University claimed the most gold medals.
Tencontestants received silver medals, each receiving a prize of $15,000. Twenty contestants received bronze medals, each receiving a prize of $8,000. The fifty-one honorable mentions each received a prize of $2,000.
Remarkably, over 30 of thefinalists were middle school students. Deng Leyan, who ranked 26th in the preliminary round, was the highest-ranking middle school student and the only one among the top 30. He won a bronze medal in the Combinatorics and Probability track.
Disqualification Due to Violation of Preliminary Round Rules
In addition to announcing the winners, Alibaba’s official announcement also addressed the disqualification of Jiang Ping. The statement revealed that Jiang Ping violated the rules of the preliminary round, leading to her disqualification from the competition. The specific nature of the violation was not disclosed.
