OpenAI Delays GPT-5 Release, Prioritizes Existing Model Development
San Francisco, CA – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that the company’s next major AI model, widely anticipated to be GPT-5, may not be released this year. In a Reddit AMA session on Thursday, Altman citedthe company’s focus on prioritizing development of its current models, which are geared towards reasoning and problem-solving.
All models are becomingincreasingly complex, and we can’t release as many things as we’d like at the same time, Altman stated. He further explained that OpenAI faces a lot of constraints and tough choices when allocating computational resources to alot of great ideas.
When a Reddit user inquired about the release timeline for GPT-5 or a comparable model, Altman responded that OpenAI will be releasing some very impressive model versions later this year, but we won’tbe calling them GPT-5. GPT is OpenAI’s series of large language models, with the latest version, GPT-4, released in March 2023.
OpenAI is facing pressure to deliver more efficient models as competitors, ranging from tech giants like Google to well-funded startups like Anthropic, continue to enhance their AI models. Earlier this month, OpenAI secured fresh funding at a valuation of $157 billion. The company projected annual revenue of $3.7 billion for 2023, but also anticipates a loss of around $5 billion.
Reddit users peppered OpenAI executives with questions aboutthe release dates of other new models and features, including the video generation model Sora, new versions of the image generation model DALL-E, ChatGPT’s camera mode, and visual capabilities for ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode (AVM).
Regarding the delay in Sora’s release, a user inquired if it was dueto too much computation/time required for reasoning or safety concerns. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s product lead, responded, We need to refine the model to ensure its reliability in terms of safety, simulation, and other areas, and we also need to scale our computational capacity.
On the next iteration of DALL-E, Altman stated that the next update is definitely worth waiting for, but there is no release plan yet. He added that AVM Vision also lacks a concrete release date. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s vice president of engineering, revealed that ChatGPT’s camera mode similarly has nofirm release date.
Earlier on Thursday, OpenAI introduced a search function called ChatGPT Search within its ChatGPT chatbot, aiming to better compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft Bing, and Perplexity. According to the company, ChatGPT Search will enable users to easily access timely information, including the latest sports scores, stockprices, and more, just like searching on the web.
This news comes amidst a flurry of activity in the AI landscape, with companies vying to deliver the most advanced and user-friendly AI models. OpenAI’s decision to prioritize existing model development suggests a shift in focus towards refining and optimizing current capabilities beforeventuring into entirely new territory.
