US B-1B Bomber Joins South Korea, Japan in Joint Air DrillsAmid North Korean ICBM Launch
Seoul, South Korea – South Korea, the United States, and Japan conducted joint air drills on Saturday, November 3rd, involving a US B-1B strategic bomber, according to the SouthKorean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The drills come in response to North Korea’s recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Theexercise, conducted in the overlapping airspace of the South Korean and Japanese Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ) east of Jeju Island, involved a range of aircraft from the three countries. These included the US B-1B bomber, F-16fighter jets, South Korean Air Force F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-2 fighter jets.
The B-1B bomber, escorted by fighter jets from all three countries,swiftly and accurately struck targets in designated training areas. The B-1B, known for its high-speed capabilities (reaching 1.25 Mach, or 1,530 kilometers per hour) and long range (12,000 kilometers), can travel from Guam to the Korean Peninsula in justtwo hours. This marks the fourth time a US strategic bomber has flown to the Korean Peninsula this year. The joint air drills also represent the second such exercise conducted by the three countries in 2024.
The JCS stated that the joint drills demonstrated the three countries’ strong commitment to deterring North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and maintaining stability in the region. The drills also serve as a clear signal of the trilateral alliance’s readiness to respond effectively to any provocations.
