Hibakusha Group to Send 31 Representatives to Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony

Oslo, Norway – The Japanese group of atomic bomb survivors, known ashibakusha, who were awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for their tireless advocacy for nuclear disarmament, will send 31 representatives to theaward ceremony in Oslo, Norway on December 10th.

The group, officially known as the Japanese Confederation of A- and H-BombSufferers Organizations, announced their delegation on November 1st. The group will be led by their three representative commissioners: Hiroshi Tanaka, Shigemitsu Tanaka, and Satoshi Minami. The delegation also includes survivorsand their children from across Japan, as well as individuals residing in South Korea and Brazil who were affected by the atomic bombings.

Notable figures joining the delegation include Izumi Nakamitsu, the United Nations Under-Secretary-Generaland High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, and Tetsu Kawasaki, an international operations commissioner for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

During the ceremony, the three representative commissioners will receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the group. Hiroshi Tanaka will deliver the acceptance speech, sharingthe group’s message of peace and the urgency of nuclear disarmament.

The delegation will depart from Japan on December 8th and will remain in Oslo until the ceremony.
