Trilateral Condemnation: US, South Korea, Japan Denounce North Korea’sICBM Test

Washington, D.C. – In a joint statementreleased on October 31st, the foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan condemned North Korea’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)test, calling it a provocative act that threatens peace and security in the Korean Peninsula and the region.

The statement, issued following a trilateralphone call between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yong, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, strongly urged North Korea to immediately cease such actions.

We strongly condemn the DPRK’s[Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] reckless and irresponsible launch of an ICBM, the statement read. This launch is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and poses a serious threat to the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula andthe region.

The condemnation comes after North Korea announced on November 1st that it had successfully tested its new ICBM, the Hwasong-19, the previous day. The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the missile was launched from the Sunan area near Pyongyang and flew forover 1,000 kilometers before landing in the East Sea.

The trilateral statement also highlighted the timing of the test, noting that it occurred after North Korea amended its constitution to officially designate South Korea as an enemy state. This move further underscores the escalating tensions between the two Koreas.

TheUS and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to supporting South Korea’s security and denuclearization efforts. They also stressed the importance of maintaining a united front against North Korea’s provocative actions and called for a peaceful resolution to the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and diplomacy.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging North Korea torefrain from further destabilizing actions. The recent ICBM test has raised concerns about the potential for renewed regional tensions and the possibility of a new arms race in Northeast Asia.
