陇原蜀水承古今: Sichuan and Gansu Artists ShowcaseCultural Exchange in Chengdu

Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China – Avibrant tapestry of artistic expression unfolded in Chengdu on November 1st, as the Sichuan-Gansu Art Masters’ Works Exchange Exhibition opened its doorsat the Sichuan Art Museum. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Sichuan Artists Association, the Gansu Artists Association, and the Gansu Art Institute, brought together over100 works from renowned artists across both provinces, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and artistic dialogue between Sichuan and Gansu.

Located in the western region of China, Sichuan and Gansu share similar geographical features and cultural characteristics, yet their distincthistorical trajectories have shaped unique artistic identities. The exhibition, aptly titled 陇原蜀水承古今 (Ancient and Modern: The Land of Long and the Waters of Shu), serves as a testament to this shared heritage and the artisticexchange that has blossomed between the two regions.

The exhibition features a diverse collection of works, encompassing Chinese painting, oil painting, printmaking, comic strips, and cartoons, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the artistic landscape of Sichuan and Gansu. The works on display vividly capture the distinct regional flavors and contemporary perspectives of theartists, showcasing the profound influence of their respective landscapes and cultural traditions.

Sichuan artists’ techniques and styles perfectly complement and inspire Gansu artists, and vice versa, remarked Wang Wancheng, Director of the Gansu Art Institute and Vice Chairman of the Gansu Artists Association. Wang, himself a participating artist,contributed a piece titled Grassland Family, inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of the Zoige Grassland in Gansu.

Liang Shimin, Chairman of the Sichuan Artists Association, who has spent time creating art in Gansu, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the deep cultural heritage of both provinces. Gansu boasts a rich culturalhistory, with ancient sites like the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang and the Maiji Mountain Grottoes dating back over a thousand years, he said. Sichuan, too, is a cultural powerhouse, attracting countless literati and artists throughout history. As the saying goes, ‘Only upon entering Sichuan can one trulyappreciate the depth of painting.’ This cultural collision allows artists from both regions to learn from each other and inject new vitality into their work.

The exhibition, which will run until November 24th, promises to be a captivating journey through the artistic landscape of Sichuan and Gansu, offering a unique opportunity to witness the convergence oftwo distinct artistic traditions and celebrate the enduring cultural exchange between these two western provinces.
