South Korean Intelligence: North Korean Advance Teams Possibly Deployed to Ukraine Frontline

Seoul, October 30, 2024 – The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) of South Korea, under the Ministry of National Defense, reported to the National Assembly’s Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that North Korean advance teams deployed to Russiaare highly likely to have been deployed to the frontline in Ukraine.

During the parliamentary oversight hearing, the DIA acknowledged that while there is no concrete evidence confirming the deploymentof North Korean troops to the frontlines, the possibility of some advance teams being deployed remains high. The DIA stated that North Korean troops are indeed being moved to battlefields such as Kursk.

Regarding reports of North Korean casualties on the battlefield, the DIA responded that they have no verifiable information to confirm these claims.

The DIA also provided insights into the potential organizational structure of North Korean troops in Russia. They suggested that North Korean troops may be integrated into Russian units, rather than operatingas independent units. This integration could be attributed to language barriers and the need for seamless cooperation.

This report follows recent media speculation about North Korean involvement in the Ukraine conflict. While the DIA has not confirmed the presence of North Korean troops on the frontlines, the possibility of their deployment, even in a limited capacity, raises concerns about the potential escalation of the conflict and the implications for regional security.
