South Korean Retailers See 6.7% Sales Increase in September
Seoul, South Korea – South Korea’s major retailers saw a 6.7%year-on-year increase in sales in September, reaching 15.3 trillion won (approximately 790.5 billion yuan), according todata released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) on Tuesday.
The ministry analyzed sales trends of 23 major retailers, including13 brick-and-mortar stores and 10 online retailers. Online sales grew by 15.7% year-on-year, with significant increases in sales of services (52.9%), food (14.7%), and home appliances and electronics (18.1%). However, fashion sales declined by 16% due to the growing popularity of cross-border e-commerce platforms from China.
In contrast, offline sales at brick-and-mortar retailers decreased by 0.9% year-on-year. While sales of home appliances and cultural goods increased by 17.9%, food sales fell by 3.4%, and fashion and miscellaneous goods sales dropped by 5%.
The data suggests a continued shift towards online shopping in South Korea, driven by convenience and a wider selection of products. However, the growing popularity of cross-border e-commerce platforms from China poses a challenge to domestic retailers, particularly in the fashion sector.
This trend highlights the evolving landscape of retail in South Korea, with online platforms gaining dominance while brick-and-mortar stores faceincreasing pressure to adapt and innovate.
