Chen Jianwen Appointed as Editor-in-Chief of People’s Daily

BEIJING – Chen Jianwen has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of the People’s Daily, China’s flagship newspaper, according to an update on the official website of the People’s Daily. Chen, aveteran journalist and former head of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, replaces Yu Shaoliang, who had been serving as both editor-in-chief andpresident of the People’s Daily since September 2023.

Chen, born in 1965, holds a master’s degree and is a member of the Communist Party of China. He has a long and distinguished career injournalism and propaganda, having served in various roles within the Chinese Communist Party and government. His previous positions include director of the Theoretical Research Office of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, director of the General Office (Planning and Finance Department) of theChina Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and member of the Party Leadership Group, Chairman’s Group, and Secretariat of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.

This appointment comes after the departure of former People’s Daily president Tuo Zhen in September. Yu Shaoliang was appointed as the new president, whilecontinuing to serve as editor-in-chief. However, with Chen’s appointment, Yu will now focus solely on his role as president.

Chen’s appointment is seen as a significant move for the People’s Daily, which plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and disseminating the Chinese Communist Party’sofficial line. His experience in propaganda and his understanding of the Party’s ideology are expected to guide the newspaper’s editorial direction in the coming years.
