Man Dies After Taking Prescription Drug Sold Illegally at Pharmacy

Chongyang County,Hubei Province, China – A 58-year-old man, Xie, died of sudden cardiac death after taking a prescription drug sold to him without a prescription at a local pharmacy in Chongyang County, Hubei Province. His family is now accusing the pharmacy of negligence and demanding accountability.

Xie, a vegetable vendor who suffered from chronic lower back pain, visited a small pharmacy nearhis stall on October 19th seeking relief. The pharmacy, staffed by a single individual, recommended a drug called Sanqi Shangyao Pian (Three Seven Injury Medicine Tablets) claiming it had pain-relieving and blood circulation-enhancing properties. The pharmacy staff even provided Xie with a glass of water and instructed him to take three tablets on the spot.

The distance between the pharmacy and our stall was only about 100 meters, said Li Ting,Xie’s daughter-in-law. He walked back to the stall, complaining of pain and discomfort, and wanted to lie down in the back warehouse. My mother-in-law let him rest and started closing up the stall.

Approximately 30 minutes later, Li Ting’s mother-in-law discovered Xie unresponsive in the warehouse and immediately called their son. Upon arriving at the scene, the family found Xie lifeless. They rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead despite attempts at resuscitation.

The doctor said there was no saving him, said Li Ting. We insisted on a brief resuscitationeffort, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

Li Ting recalled seeing a green medicine box in Xie’s hand as he was being carried to the car. She later learned that Xie had purchased the medicine from the pharmacy just half an hour prior.

A Resident Death Medical Certificate (Inference) provided by the family states that Xie’s death was due to sudden cardiac death.

Li Ting stated that Xie had no prior history of heart disease. She further revealed that the doctor informed them that Sanqi Shangyao Pian was a prescription drug with various contraindications and should only be sold with a prescription.

The drug’s instructionsmention potential side effects such as palpitations, tachycardia, chest tightness, elevated blood pressure, respiratory distress, and allergic reactions, Li Ting explained.

Following the incident, the family reported the case to the police, who investigated the scene and collected the remaining medicine tablets and packaging.

The pharmacy has been penalized for its violation ofregulations regarding the sale of prescription drugs. However, the extent of the penalty and whether the pharmacy will face further legal action remains unclear.

While the family is grieving the loss of Xie, they are also seeking answers regarding the pharmacy’s role in his death. They are questioning whether the pharmacy’s negligence in sellinga prescription drug without a prescription contributed to his sudden cardiac death.

Further investigation is needed to determine the exact cause of Xie’s death and whether the pharmacy’s actions directly contributed to it. The case highlights the importance of strict regulations regarding the sale of prescription drugs and the potential consequences of disregarding such regulations.
