China’s Largest Single-Unit Tower Solar Thermal Project Reaches a Milestone:Absorber Tower Topped Out
Deqing, Qinghai Province, China -China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has announced the successful topping out of the absorber tower and main plant building for its 200,000kilowatt tower solar thermal project in Delingha, marking a significant milestone in the project’s construction. The project, the largest single-unit tower solar thermalproject in China, is expected to enter the installation phase shortly.
The absorber tower, a key component of the project, stands at an impressive height of 188.5 meters. Constructed using a variable cross-section reinforced concretecylindrical structure, it boasts a base diameter of 25 meters and a top diameter of 21.4 meters. The tower’s construction, which commenced in mid-April, employed a slipform technique and took 199days to complete.
The main plant building, designed with an integrated steam generator and turbine room, is strategically engineered to minimize pressure loss in the main steam and reheat steam pipelines, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the steam turbine generator set.
The project has already achieved significant progress in other areas. As of today,4,986 sets of heliostats have been installed, while the construction of the air-cooled island, water treatment workshop, and heat storage and exchange system is progressing smoothly.
This project is part of CGN’s larger 1 million kilowatt solar thermal storage integrated project in Delingha. Theintegrated project comprises 800,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power generation, 200,000 kilowatts of solar thermal power generation, and 6 hours of energy storage. With a solar thermal storage ratio of 25%, it represents the highest solar thermal storage ratio amongsimilar projects in China.
The photovoltaic power generation portion of the project is nearing completion, with construction exceeding 95%. It is scheduled to be connected to the grid within the year. Upon completion, the entire integrated project is expected to generate 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to savingapproximately 550,000 tons of standard coal consumption and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 1.3 million tons.
This project demonstrates China’s commitment to developing clean and sustainable energy sources, contributing to the country’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality. The successful topping out of the absorber towermarks a significant step towards the realization of this ambitious project, which will play a vital role in promoting the development of solar thermal energy in China.
