Minecraft to End VR and MR Support in March 2025

Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, has announced that the game will no longer support VRand MR devices after March 2025. This decision was quietly revealed in the update notes for the latest Minecraft: Bedrock Edition update (version 1.21.40) released on Wednesday. While players can still enjoy all purchased content on their computers, no further updates will be provided for VR andMR devices after the specified date.

This news comes after Mojang announced the discontinuation of PS VR support for Minecraft in September, also with the cut-off date set for March 2025. The recently released PS versionof the game does not include PS VR2 support.

Minecraft initially launched Oculus Rift support in 2016, followed by Windows MR headset support in 2017. The team later adopted OpenXR, enabling compatibility with all SteamVR headsets. However, the Rift version was discontinued in 2021 after Meta stopped providing updates, leaving only the Windows Store version for official PCVR support.

The decision to end VR and MR support for Minecraft comes as a surprise to many players who have enjoyed the immersive experience offered by these devices. While the game’s core gameplay remains accessible on traditional platforms, the loss of VR and MR support signifies a shift in Mojang’s focus towards other areas of development.

Third-party mods such as QuestCraft and Vivecraft (for Java Edition only) will continue to support PC VR experiences. However, these mods are not officially endorsed by Mojang and may not be compatible with future updates.

This move highlights the evolving landscape of VR and MR gaming. While the technology has made significant strides, it appears that mainstream adoption has not reached the level anticipated by some developers. As a result, companies like Mojang arechoosing to prioritize resources on platforms with a larger user base.

For Minecraft players who enjoy the immersive experience of VR and MR, this news is a disappointment. However, the game remains accessible on traditional platforms, and the developers have assured players that all purchased content will continue to be available.
