OpenAI to Launch Orion, a Model 100 Times More PowerfulThan GPT-4, in December
OpenAI is reportedly set to launch anew, cutting-edge model codenamed Orion in December, marking a significant leap in AI capabilities. According to a report by The Verge, Orion isexpected to be significantly more powerful than GPT-4, with some OpenAI executives claiming it will be over 100 times stronger.
While internallyconsidered the successor to GPT-4, it remains unclear if OpenAI will publicly label it as GPT-5. The company is adopting a different release strategy for Orion compared to GPT-4, opting for a more controlled rollout. Instead of a wide release through ChatGPT, Orion will initially be licensed to select companies closely collaborating with OpenAI, enabling them to integrate it into their products and features.
Sources indicate that Microsoft engineers are preparing to host Orionon Azure as early as November. This collaboration between OpenAI and Microsoft underscores the growing influence of AI in the tech industry.
The anticipated performance boost of Orion aligns with previous statements from OpenAI Japan CEO Tadao Nagasaki. In September, he suggested that while GPT-3 and GPT-4 exhibited similar performance, the upcoming GPT Next (likely referring to Orion) would deliver a substantial leap, achieving a 100-fold increase in capabilities.
OpenAI’s long-term vision involves integrating its large language models (LLMs) to eventually create a more powerful model known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Orion isa crucial step towards this ambitious goal, potentially ushering in a new era of AI advancement.
This news highlights the rapid pace of progress in the field of AI, with OpenAI continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible. The release of Orion is anticipated to have significant implications for various industries, from content creation and research to customer service and beyond.
