Haarlem, Netherlands – A Beverwijk woman has been convicted of intentionally endangering air traffic after she blindedthe pilots of a police helicopter with a laser pointer. The woman, who was not identified in court, claimed she was attempting to contact aliens when she aimed the laserat the aircraft.

The incident occurred on an unspecified date, but the court proceedings took place on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Thewoman admitted to shining the laser at the helicopter, but insisted that she did not intend to harm the pilots. She told the court that she believed she was communicating with extraterrestrial beings and that the laser was a way to signal them.

Thejudge, however, was not convinced by the woman’s explanation. He ruled that her actions were reckless and posed a serious risk to the safety of the pilots and the helicopter. The judge stated that the woman’s actions could have resulted ina crash, potentially leading to serious injuries or even death.

The woman was sentenced to 80 hours of community service. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had initially requested a prison sentence, but the judge ultimately decided on a less severe punishment.

Aiming a laser at an aircraft can cause temporary blindness and disorientation, potentially leading to a crash. The incident also raises questions about the growing phenomenon of people attempting to contact aliens, with some resorting to potentially dangerous methods.
