成都,中国 – One year ago,the immersive theatrical production Starlight 1953 opened its doors in Chengdu’s Jintang County, igniting a passion for history and inspiringaudiences with its powerful portrayal of the Korean War. The production, which has already staged over 200 performances, has become a testament to the enduring power oftheatre, its ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level, and its capacity to transmit historical narratives in a compelling and engaging way.

Starlight 1953 is the brainchild of playwright and director Pan Naiqi, whohas poured his heart and soul into the project. From the initial conception last year to its first anniversary, I’ve witnessed the vitality, reach, and impact of theatre through this production, Pan told Cover News. We hopeto further enhance the experience, making it even more diverse and engaging, offering audiences something truly unique and unforgettable.

The production, a collaborative effort by a group of young artists, draws inspiration from the life of Hu Xiudao, a Jintang native and a renowned Korean War hero. Starlight 1953 uses immersive theatre techniques to showcase the rich red cultural heritage of Jintang, connecting audiences to the past and fostering a sense of continuity.

On October 25th, the first anniversary of the production’s opening, the Starlight 1953 Red Theatre Space welcomed hundreds ofvisitors, including students and members of the public. The experience is a multi-sensory journey, blending historical exhibits, real-life sets, VR technology, holographic projections, role-playing, and interactive elements. This immersive approach transforms audiences from passive observers into active participants in the historical narrative. They sing along toclassic military songs like Unity is Strength, engage in mock military drills, participate in air raid simulations, and even write letters home, experiencing firsthand the simple yet profound ideals, unwavering spirit, and selfless dedication of the generation that fought in the Korean War.

Initially, many audience members weren’t deeply familiar withthis period of history, said Wen Shuo, the production’s operations manager and an actor. But after experiencing our immersive theatre, the flame of this red history has ignited in their hearts, reflected in their words and expressions. The audience’s response is a testament to the power of our work.

Starlight 1953 is more than just a theatrical production; it’s a journey into the past, a celebration of courage and sacrifice, and a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit. It’s a testament to the fact that even in the digital age, the magic of theatrecontinues to captivate and inspire, connecting generations and ensuring that the stories of the past continue to resonate with audiences of today.
