Nvidia Takes Full Responsibility for Blackwell Chip Defect, Promises Early 2024Release

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has confirmed that the company’s highly anticipated Blackwell AIchip, plagued by a design flaw, has been fixed and will begin shipping in early 2024. The announcement comes as a relief to tech companies worldwidewho have been eagerly awaiting the chip’s release since its unveiling in March.

Our Blackwell chip had a design flaw, Huang admitted during a meeting with Goldman Sachs. While it was functional, the flaw resulted in low yields. This was 100% Nvidia’s fault.

The Blackwell chip, featuring a groundbreaking new architecture, has been in high demand from major tech players. However, production delays due to the design flaw sparked speculation about potential issues with Nvidia’s partnership with TSMC, the chip manufacturer.

In August, some media outlets reported that TSMC might be partly responsible for the defect, suggestingtensions between the two companies. Huang vehemently denied these claims, calling them fake news. He clarified that the issue was entirely Nvidia’s responsibility and that TSMC had been instrumental in helping them fix the flaw.

We designed seven different types of chips to ensure the Blackwell computing devices worked, Huang explained. We started production simultaneously.

The CEO’s statement marks a significant development in the saga of the Blackwell chip. While the delay has undoubtedly caused frustration for tech companies, the confirmation of the fix and the early 2024 release date should alleviate concerns about the chip’s availability.

Huang also expressed hisawareness of the intense demand for AI chips, stating, The demand for chips from tech companies keeps me up at night.

The Blackwell chip’s release is expected to have a major impact on the AI landscape, potentially accelerating advancements in fields like machine learning, natural language processing, and autonomous driving.
