JetBrains, the renowned software development tools provider, has announced that its popular IDEs, WebStormand Rider, are now available for free for non-commercial use. This move follows the company’s earlier decision to offer its RustRover and Aqua IDEsfor free for similar purposes.

The free access applies to individuals and organizations using the software for learning, open-source project development, content creation, or hobbyprojects. However, it does not extend to commercial projects. JetBrains will continue to implement its existing licensing model for commercial use, and other JetBrains IDEs remain unaffected by this update.

How to Apply for a Free Subscription:

The process of obtaining a free subscription is straightforward. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Install and run Rider or WebStorm.
  2. Upon launch, a license dialog will appear. Select the Non-commercial use option.
  3. Log in to your JetBrains Account or create a new one.
  4. Accept the Toolbox Non-Commercial Use Subscription Agreement.
  5. Start developing within your IDE.

Switching from a Trial or Paid License:

If you are currently using a trial or paid license toactivate your IDE, you can switch to a non-commercial subscription by following these steps:

  • For Rider: Go to Help | Manage Licenses.
  • For WebStorm: Go to Help | Register.
  • In the opened window, click the Remove License button.
  • Select Non-commercial use.
  • Log in to your JetBrains Account or create a new one.
  • Accept the Toolbox Non-Commercial Use Subscription Agreement.
  • Start developing within your IDE.

Note: JetBrains does not support non-commercial licenses for versions prior to Rider 2024.2.7 and WebStorm 2024.2.4. Users are advised to download the latest versions for access to this offer.

This move by JetBrains is a significant development for the software development community, offering free access to powerful and widely-used IDEs for non-commercial projects. The company has stated that it will evaluate the impact of this initiative to determine if it can be extended to other IDEs in the future.
